Attractions in St. Martin
Fort St. Louis - Overlooking Marigot Bay sits the imposing figure of Fort St. Louis, the largest historical monument in St. Martin. This historic fort was named after the famous crusading king of France. When built in 1767, the fort was designed to protect Marigot from foreign invaders. Now, it no longer serves its former purpose, but the steep climb up to the summit provides a panoramic view of the island and the sea surrounding it. The area is open 24/7 with signs explaining historical events.The Marigot Market – Open on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the open-air market is set up along the wharves on the Blvd. De France. This open-air market offers a colorful selection of homegrown produce, tropical fruits, spices, and freshly caught seafood.
St. Martin Museum – Located in Marigot nest to the Marina Port la Royale is the St. Martin Museum. This museum is dedicated to preserving St. Martin’s history and culture. The museum is open daily from 9AM to 4PM and is free of charge.
Marigot – This is the capital city of the French side of St. Martin. This city embodies the French spirit more than any other in the Caribbean. Marigot is lined with cafes, bistros, pastry shops, and luxury boutiques. Shoppers will be able to find luxury items from such high end names as Chanel and Lacoste and all shopping in St. Martin is duty free!
Grand Case – This fabulous beach near the northern tip of St. Martin shelters a small fishing village. Fine food can be found here, as well as a distinctive style of architecture. Tuesday nights during the high season feature a festival on the Blvd de Grand Case.
Paradise Peak – This is the highest point on the island rising to a height of 1400 feet! At the top of paradise Peak are two observation decks offering spectacular views of the tropical forests below and the seas on the horizon.
Butterfly Farm – St. Martin has a unique attraction with the Butterfly Farm! Here you can walk amongst rare and exotic butterflies from around the world. The Butterfly Farm features a lush, tropical paradise with music, live native flowers, and waterfalls. The Butterfly Farm is open daily form 9AM to 3PM and is only $10 to enter.
Orleans, The French Quarter – Orleans is a quiet little fishing village also known as the French Quarter. It is located on the eastern side of the island and is one of the original settlements on St. Martin with some of the original buildings still standing. Development has not happened on this side of the island keeping some of the old time atmosphere.
